Planning Mise-en-Scene
1. Describe the costumes your characters will wear. Why are they going to dress that way? What colors (if any) are you going to emphasize and why? Make sure you take pictures and/or video and you include them in your blog.
-I envision Enrique dressing how Hispanic boys in the mid-90's were wearing. This is due to his name, which is a Spanish name translating to “home ruler.” When my group and I created his character, we wanted him to be a grounded individual who is down to earth. Therefore, we wanted his style to be very laid back. So, for Enriques outfit we decided he would wear an open blue flannel, with a white tank top, a gold wristwatch, white sneakers and black jeans. My group and I wanted to emphasize colors of innocence (white) and loyalty (blue) to his friend. The black jeans represent his simplicity, in contrast to his out-spoken jittery friend also, black jeans complete the look. Lastly, the gold wristwatch is worn for a comedic bit in the opening but also, to represent that Enrique is of a higher socioeconomic status than Michael and that he is a lot more responsible with his items unlike Michael.
-With Michael, my group and I envisioned him being shameless and also reckless, for example he often has no shame “borrowing” a lot of money and never pays it back. We chose his name for its meaning, “protector of evil” which we found ironic because he freezes up when confronted, and his friend has to step in for him, also he dies, so he was not really protecting anybody. But because his name is “protector of evil” we viewed him also having that similar laid-back mid-90's fashion to show that he is confident in himself and what he wears, when not being confronted. So, for Michael's look, my group and I wanted him to wear a red basketball jersey, a white long-sleeve underneath, silver rings and a silver necklace, and black jeans pants with black sneakers. We wanted to emphasis colors like red (his jersey) to foreshadow the danger his character is going to be in very soon. We also wanted the red jersey to be a direct contrast with Enriques blue flannel, as blue and red are opposite colors, we wanted to demonstrate how different the two characters are in personality, but how similar they are in fashion. The basketball jersey also has significance as it shows how dear basketball is to him, and in the opening, you can see him stumbling to grab his basketball, which he holds throughout the film. The white long-sleeve underneath is used to also show the similarity and difference between him and Enrique, they both wear white however, Enrique wears a tank top, while Michael wears a long sleeve. The black pants and shoes are worn to show his underlying fear and uncertainty, also to highlight the difference between him and Enrique. Lastly, he wears silver jewelry to represent his socioeconomic status, unlike Enrique who wears gold, he wears silver to show his irresponsibility with jewelry, and that he cannot be trusted with gold.
2. What locations are you going to use? Why are you using those locations? Take pictures/ video and include it in your blog. Make sure you explain why those pictures/video are going to be used in your film opening.
-My group and I are going to use two different homes, ideally lower-middle class to middle class homes to showcase the two boys' economic status. We plan on using the bathroom, their rooms, and front porches, so the audience see’s how the boys live firsthand. We are also using the same neighborhood as the home for uniformity, and also it is where most of the film will take place, outside.
