Analyzing My Media Project Through Media Theories

As I developed my media project, I realized that various theories of media can be applied in explaining how my project could be interpreted and received by the audience. The most relevant theories are Reception Theory, Representation Theory, and Uses and Gratifications Theory. Reception Theory – Stuart Hall Reception Theory postulates that audiences do not just receive media in a passive way—they make sense of it depending on their personal experience, beliefs, and background. In my media project, different viewers are attracted to different things depending on who they are. For example, a viewer who connects with the characters or themes of the project might be more emotionally attached or invested, while others might criticize some things or perceive them in unique ways. Representation Theory – Stuart Hall Representation Theory is also key to grasping my project. How I represented certain characters and social issues (e.g., gender roles, cultural identity, or class) will affect how t...

Production Blog: Behind the Scenes of Probate Starring: Deion Hendrickson as Michael Kornell (M.K) Our crew spent this week shooting our own original short film Probate, a dramatic story of loyalty, consequences, and the dangers of fast money. I played Michael Kornell, a loose cannon best friend who gets in way too deep with the wrong people. My Role in the Project: I acted out M.K, but I also came up with scenes, improvised dialogue, and made suggestions on how we could frame some shots better to fit the tone. Our crew was really collaborative, and everyone contributed their ideas. Arianna wrote and was camera, Ian edited, Nathan co-wrote and acted out Rolley, and I was all about the performance and some direction of scenes. Production Process: We started by shooting the morning routine scenes and sidewalk dialogue. We shot the bathroom intro scene with steam to fog the mirror for credits — it turned out pristine. We got a split screen done for the two characters exiting their h...

Album Chosen: Graduation by Kanye West About the Artist: Chicago-born, Atlanta-raised Kanye West started out producing tracks for local artists before gaining prominence for his production work on Roc-A-Fella Records. Kanye achieved massive success after producing Jay-Z's 2001 album The Blueprint. Kanye went on to pursue a solo music career with The College Dropout (2004) and Late Registration (2005), before graduating with Graduation (2007), which completed his "Higher Education Trilogy." Why We Chose Graduation: We chose Kanye West's Graduation because it's such a bold jump for hip-hop. It brings in house, indie rock, and electronic music into a genre that used to be more sample-based and soul-influenced. Kanye had been influenced by stadium tours and wanted music that sounded massive—music that would shake in an arena. The album is also introspective, looking at fame, identity, and media critique. successful AS-level blogs effectively used the four elements of production to create meaning: Camera: They used a variety of shots (close-ups, tracking shots, and wide angles) to establish mood and character perspective. Editing: They incorporated smooth transitions, match-on-action cuts, and well-paced editing to maintain engagement. Sound: They utilized diegetic and non-diegetic sound to build tension, emotion, or atmosphere. Mise-en-scène: They carefully selected lighting, costumes, props, and set design to reinforce the tone and themes of their film. In their CCR, they portrayed aspects of identity by reflecting on themes like social status, cultural background, or personal struggles through their characters. Their message often centered around topics like self-discovery, societal expectations, or overcoming adversity. Some upheld traditional character types and plot structures (e.g., hero vs. villain, coming-of-age narratives), while others subverted tropes by giving u...

Sweding Project: Scott Pilgrim Scene Recreation What Went Well One of the greatest achievements of our Sweding project was the edit. I was extremely intentional about matching the speed of the scene, the color palette, and the transition as closely as possible to the original scene. What this did was give us the Scott Pilgrim world so well that it actually made the low-budget remake look much more polished. The final project resembled the original scene a great deal, and the edit was a large contributor to that. Challenges We Faced While the edit went well, the film experienced several complications while it was being recorded. The most prominent of these were that it did not use the proper mic. Since the device built-in device mic of the device was being used for the purpose of the recording, the external sounds were distinctly heard, making it more of a challenge for the listener to hear the dialog properly. The audio quality would otherwise be much better if it were recorded us...
